Our Story

For nearly a century, L St. Tavern has stood as a cornerstone of the South Boston community, where Irish traditions meet neighborhood charm and good times. Conveniently located at the intersection of L and East 8th Street, this cozy bar welcomes locals, tourists, and the occasional celebrity. L St. Tavern traces its origins all the way back to the prohibition era, when it operated as a speak-easy while the sale of alcohol was illegal in the U.S. After prohibition, L St. Tavern became a prominent bar where locals would go after work. Famously, L Street Tavern was the chosen hangout spot for Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the film Good Will Hunting, which helped launch both their careers and the bar's global reputation. This truly transformed the bar into what it is today - although it has still hung onto all of its traditions and charm. The bar remains committed to the locals through charity and community events. We celebrate Irish traditions, the local community, and plenty of new faces, so come unwind, make friends, and enjoy a taste of Southie.
